gable frames
gable frame is the name of the "frame" at the end (gable) of a building. end frames of portal structures are referred to as gable frames, for example.
sinc these end frames are clad, they have a requirement for regularly spaced colmuns needed along the line of the gable frames. this offers the opportunity of placing diagonal bracing (or shear wall) between, say, two of the columns to provide a braced frame to resist the lateral forces. hence the need for lateral frame action is not required, which is the case with internal frames of much larger clear spans.
the columns in the end frame, or gable posts, also whithstand lateral wind loading (from the gable end direction) which is reacted at the base and head of the post. the plan bracing at roof level, transfers the load back to the foundation system viathe bracing system at the side of the building. gable frame posts and rafters are lighter in weight and economically sized due to the reduced spans and reduced lateral loads (1/2 c.f. a main internal frame).
