masonry firewall requirements
i have run into this design problem a couple of times and am wondering how others handle it. i have a project that is an addition to an existing structure. it requires a masonry firewall adjacent to the existing building. the wall will be approximately 54' tall. how is the best way to brace the wall so that the new structure will fall without pulling down the wall if there were a fire? and how best to tie the wall to the existing building to brace it if it were left standing? i don't think there is anyway to make it freestanding. are there some design resources available for this? i have found very little information about requirements. i realize there may be a regional difference in how this is handled. can someone point me in the right direction?
factory mutual had a publication "criteria for maximum foreseeable loss fire walls and space separation"
hope this will help you.
