nds side member thickness
re: 2001 nds table 11j
does "side member thickness" refer to the thickness of the member being supported by the main member?
thank you ...
check out our whitepaper library.
i don't have my copy of the 2001 nds handy, however, i am assuming that table 11j is the 2005 nds is the same as table 11j in the 2001 nds.
in the 2005 nds table 11j is for single shear connections using lag screws. the side member is the member for which load is being transfered to the lag screw and then through the lag screw into the main member. so the main member is the member receiving the thread portion of the lag screw.
table 11j assumes that the lag screw penetrates 8 diameters into the main member, so in most cases the main member will be thicker than the side member.
another thing you will notice is that 3 values are given for the strength of the lag screw for loading perpendicular to the grain. the value in the fourth column is for lag screws acting perpendicular to the grain in both the main and side members.
when you have a single shear bolted connection with two wood members the side
does "side member thickness" refer to the thickness of the member being supported by the main member?
yes.
