historic steel shapes
greetings,
a co-worker and i are preparing plans for an addition to an existing building and have come across a call out for a steel beam that does not appear in our available references.
it is called out as an "8 i 18.4" and i was hoping someone out there could help us out with the section properties.

sounds like it may be an i (standard) beam.

rday - beam is an american standard "i" beam as outlined by cwic. per aisc manual of steel construction, sixth edition (also in the fifth edition and probably older ones as well) properties are:
flange width: 4.000 in
flange avg. thickness: 0.425 in
depth: 8.00 in
web thickness: 0.270
area: 5.34 in^2
d/af: 4.71
axis x-x
i: 56.9 in^4
s: 14.2 in^3
r: 3.26 in
axis y-y
i: 3.8 in^4
s: 1.9 i^3
r: 0.84 in
if you need the detailed physical measurements, let me know they are listed also.
please note that there is a "modern" section s8x18.4 that is listed in the asic manual, ninth edition but it's properties are slightly different that the historic one you have requested.

thank you. the info you supplied is just what we needed.
we don't have an aisc manual that predates the 8th. we did see the new s shape but weren't sure if the old i was just renamed. sounds like it wasn't.
looks like we'll be buying the steel shapes data base from aisc.

yes, we just got the dg 15 per pylko - very nice book - a must have if you deal with any older structures.
