web packed steel ridge beam
i just want to see what you guys usually do when you have steel ridge beam on residential project. the hanger of the rafters are face mount so you web pack the steel beam on each side with wood and secure it with what? is 3/4 thrubolt @ 24 enough? do you design this bolt like if the wood is spanning from bolt to bolt? or do you assume it is going to bear on the flange? how do you usually web pack your steel beam?
simpson has a hanger for this condition. its a top flange hanger. you can either bolt a 2x to the top flange of the beam and nail the hanger or you can weld the hanger to the top flange of the beam. see page 65 of the c-2005 catalog. also, see page 165 for hanger options.
in most situations with a steel beam supporting wood, i install a nailer on top of the beam. this allows a variety of connection details to work - top flange hangers and direct nailing.
that said, if i were forced to attach to the web, i would use a shear connection rather than bearing on the bottom flange. the wood would then span from bolt to bolt, similar to other ledger situations.
twinnell, i rather use the lssu hanger for sloped beam (adjustable), therefore you need to attach it from the face, not top flange hanger. i threw away my 2005 and 2006. all i have now is 2007.
millr, do you think it is better to just put 1 row or 2 rows of thrubolts? how do they usually like to pack the web?
the lbv top flange hangers can be sloped (see p.197 of 2007 catalog). the nailer also allows you to nail the plywood at the ridge.
if you do use a face mount hanger, i would use a solid piece of wood and bolt it on every two or three feet. the bolt spacing should be calculated based on the wood spanning and the bolt shear. i don't think it matters how many rows of bolts, or whether they are staggered, since they should be spaced adequately laterally.
millr, yes i am aware that you can special order those hangers. my boss doesnt like to specify custom order hanger for some reason. he said there might be waiting time, error, etc. he rather uses the lssu with web packed, plus your steel beam wont be dropped as much.
