allowable masonry shear stress
what would the allowable shear stress be for an un-reinforced masonry wall that is loaded out-of-plane? seciton 2.2.5.2 of aci530 applies to in-plane shear stress (i.e. shear walls).
would 2.3.5.2.2 of aci be applicable even though this section is for reinforced masonry?

look at the commentary for section 2.2.5. they indicate that for out of plane shear the requirements of 2.2.5.2 be used.
i would use caution when using aci 530 for in-plane shear capacities of plain masonry. i attended a seminar recently where testing was done on partially grouted walls and the code was considerably unconservative for this case. it really wants to be ratio'd by anet/agross. the testing done for the code equations was on small walls. the testing done for the seminar i attended was done on larger scale walls with partial grouting and the wall tended to act more like a frame than a wall.
this will likely be in the code in '11.
