once upon a time.
came upon this comment in an asce trans. paper dated from 1939. it is one engineer, jens egede nielsen commenting upon a paper entitled 'design of circular tanks', written by george s. slater;
'it may be opportune here to draw attention to the importance of continuous operation when placing concrete in the forms. if the operation is interrupted the tank will develop a horizontal leak precisely at that level, and it requires considerable care and expense to correct it afterward. the writer recalls one tank for which the cost was increased several hundred dollars on account of a short lunch period.'
hahaha, now the lunch alone for the trades would be several hundred dollars.
not a very techie post but my how things have changed on the cost side but not of course the concern over leaking tanks.
well, yes, but they were totally different dollars back then....
