depth beyond anchor embedment
when anchoring to concrete for tension loads, what kind of concrete thickness should there be beyond the anchor's depth of embedment? for example, if an anchor bolt is embedded 8" deep, what is minimum thickness of concrete required? my question relates to the anchor bolt installation, and not the total resisting weight of concrete or other design considerations.
3" minimum cover from bottom of the anchor to the bottom of concrete (minimum cover distance to rebar for concrete in contact with soil)
all the concrete anchor suppliers, eg. ramset, will provide the answers you request.
the exact figure will alter depending on the size of anchor (diameter x length) and the physical size of the "piece" doing the connecting; edge distance and a few other things.

fss - one anchor manufacturer's literature shows 125% of anchor length as minimum thickness. icbo (code) requires a minimum of 150% of anchor length as the minimum thickness for adhesive and mechanical anchors. keeping in mind minimum cover for rebar as "whyun" mentioned is also a reasonable consideration.
other codes refer to "design by professional engineer", but give no further guideline (uh, that would be the code you are likely dealing with!)
hilti has a program you can download from their website to select bolts based on configuration of the bearing plate, concrete specs, and loads. but you input the concrete thickness and the program will tell you which bolts pass and which fail. programs work for us and international.
