fees for shop drawings
hello.
what kind of fee is typical for reviewing shop drawings? thanks.
reviewing submittals is typically included in the overall structural fee for a project. we try to leave 25% of our fee for construction phase activities, such as site visits, construction bulletins, reviewing submittals, etc.

structural01, i believe i can answer for him. reviewing all types of shop drawings is typically included in the construction administration portion (around 20-25% of the fee). so reviewing shop drawings from the steel fabricator is typically included in your fee.
i believe you didn't read his post closely enough.
normally when i get a set of drawings from a steel fabricator, i don't know the total construction cost. so, how can you set a 25% fee? the drawings are steel detail drawings.
25% of your design fee. did you not design the building/bridge for which you are receiving shops?
25% should cover "steel shop drawings" as well as concrete mix design, weld procedure, and other submittals required to be submitted per project specifications. in addition, it should cover other construction admin activities such as responding to rfi's, site visit, etc.
if you need a $ amount to charge for reviewing shop drawings, why don't you multiply your company's standard mark-up by your direct salary.
the shop drawings i receive i don't design the original building. sometime the building structural drawing layout calls out for the design of connections for certain load or other requirements by others.
i think i agree with whyun. the thing to do might be to charge based on hourly or salary fee.
