nonseismic energy absoption(impact loads)-typical structure?

i have an assignment to provide a barrier against heavy and fast moving stones. energy that comes with the stone is about 2000 kilojoules(ie about 1500 lbf.ft).
i will do fine if you direct me to a typical application or a civil engineering discipline that deals with similar phenomena.
