Directly Toleranced Dimensions

Profile vs Direct Tolerancing

Another Profile vs Direct Tolerancing Tip
Stop Messing With "Old School" Tolerancing

Last month's Tip asked the question: Do all toleranced dimensions relate to the datums stated on the drawing? And the answer was a resounding NO. Datums only apply when referenced. This month the drawing has been modified to solve the problem. The note UNTOLERANCED DIMENSIONS ARE BASIC is now possible because the "old school" linear and angular tolerances have been replaced by a general profile of a surface tolerance in the general titleblock. Now, instead of trying to find the center of the 30mm radius, the surface may be inspected to the required profile.
