stone veneer anchorage ibc code interpretation
does anyone have a reference which explains what ibc 1405.6, item one is describing?
this is the text from the 2003 commentary. there is a figure also in the commentary.
"this section permits direct anchorage of stone veneers
to the wall backing by one of two specified methods. it
should be noted that support from below is required to
be provided in accordance with section 1405.5. since the framing is providing only lateral anchorage, thicknesses
of up to 10 inches (254 mm) are permitted. there are two methods of anchorage prescribed in this section, based upon the construction of the wall backing. the first method specifies the anchor type, size and spacing for concrete and masonry backing (see figure 1405.6). the second method specifies the anchorage requirements for wood-frame walls.
both methods require that the anchorage ties be of corrosion-resistant material. corrosion-resistant ties
are necessary because of the potential for corrosion caused by both water penetration and an adverse reaction of the metal with the mortar or other masonry material. according to the first method, the specified tie spacings, in conjunction with the cement grout, are intended to achieve lateral support points of the veneer at adequate spacings. where lateral ties are not installed at the required locations, buckling of the masonry veneer under vertical dead loads and lateral loads is possible. it should be noted that the required 1 inch (25 mm) of mortar grout creates walls that are not considered cavity wall construction. the second method requires that two layers of waterproof paper be installed over the stud construction to provide protection from moisture penetration."

thanks don. reading the ibc, it sounds like there needs to be anchors at 1-foot in each direction and wires through these anchors at 2-feet. it looks like we need to purchase the commentary. thanks again.
