old beam shape id?
can anyone help id an old beam shape designated cb 211? it is 21" x 58#.
probably stands for "carriage beam". this one is approximately a w21 x 57#.
customer requests duplication.

could be a carneige beam.
aisc "iron and steel beams 1873 to 1952 lists several cb211's on pages 54 and 55. the 58# beam is foubnd on page 55, fourth from the bottom.
area 17.05, 8" flange, .36" web thick, i = 1253.2, s = 120.2, r = 8.61

in my copy of aisc's "iron and steel beams 1873-1952", i found 15 beams with the designation of cb211 or cb211n (i'm not sure what the n represents). all are shown as 21 x 8 (i assume that 8 is the flange width)or 21 x 8-1/4. the weights vary from 76 plf to 55 plf. the manufacturers vary depending upon the year and include carnegie steel, illinois steel,carnegie-illinois steel, united states steel.
there are 2 shown that weigh 58 plf. one a 21 x 8 and one a 21 x 8-1/4. all of the section properties are very similar but do vary by anyware from .1% to about 8%.
if you can find a copy of the book, the beams are on pages 54 and 55. if not, if you can provide the flange width, i will provide whatever information i can.
i have scanned in available information from the 1934 carnegie pocket companion. here is probably more than you want to know about the beam, loading table and the design requirements of the time (13 pages, 950 kb)
i could use help with a similar designation. can you give me the section properties for a 21 cb 122 beam? specifically, i need the top flange width and thickness.

i find several cb122 beams on page 73, but they are 12" deep, not 21". the weights per foot vary from 32# to 36# per foot, all with about 6.5" flanges and webs in the order of .s7 to .37".
will need some more data to determine the exact beam to give you the properties.
the 21" deep beams are cb 211's as you previously called for.
