bond beam as diaphragm chord
when designing a bond beam as a diaphragm chord, can vertical control joints in the wall really be compatible? anyone have a tip on how you make these two work together?
most control joint details stop the ladur joint reinforcement either side of the vertical control joint, but continue the horizontal bond beam rebars in lintels and chords across the joint.
you can have some contol over joint and lintel locations and spacings, but a diaphragm chord necessarily has to be continuous. the structural considerations trump shrinkage considerations in my opinion. this is what amerhein says too. this is a good question.
i agree with sundale. i think in general that masons build the bond beam at the top of the wall continuous, and do not put control joints through it.

i have found masons in the same geographical area that treat bond beams differently at the control joints, some will grease the bars so they will slip, some will stop them, and some will run the bars through. we use them as diaphragm chords but we have a detail that shows to stop the control joint at the bottom of the bond beam (top of wall only, floors are treated differently). we also make sure to point it out at the preconstruction meeting.
under a design that provides a member other than the bond beam as the diaphragm chord, it would be allowable to discontinue the reinforcement in the bond beam. it depends upon how the design is done.
